hvac refrigerant

    refrigerant
  • any substance used to provide cooling (as in a refrigerator)

  • causing cooling or freezing; "a refrigerant substance such as ice or solid carbon dioxide"

  • Causing cooling or refrigeration

  • (refrigeration) the process of cooling or freezing (e.g., food) for preservative purposes

    hvac
  • The general industry term encompassing a variety of home comfort equipment, including air conditioners, furnaces, thermostats, filters, ductwork and filters.

  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

  • The term used to refer to the mechanical systems which heat, cool, filter or dehumidify air in a room or building. An example of an alternative HVAC system would be Ground Source Heat. For more information on Ground Source Heat click here.

the other condenser coil on the back side was frozen solid. Not a lot of air was getting through that little space. Took a couple hours with a space heater to thaw. The HVAC guys added some refrigerant and I spent a little time beforehand cleaning out the condensation pump.

The pump was high pressure but was really for overflow as it needed 1.5" of water to fire, and thus the piping to it was full of rusty metal and other gunky goods.

Supposedly it was caused by the low refrigerant. I would have figured a low-pressure cut off switch would have shut down the system but was told because of the two story vertical run to the evaporator unit, all the refrigerant was sitting down on this end. Of course, if the cut off switch was at the evaporator, and the refrigerant was on the low end, it would have shut off, right? *shrug* Will have to make monthly checks from now on.

Red Dot-Evaporator failure analysis

Note the round pits developing in the copper tubes of this evaporator (shown as a cross-section). When moisture gets into the refrigerant it turns to hydrofluoric acid, which can attack copper and other metals. In this case, it makes the evaporator less effective at changing liquid refrigerant into a vapor (the process which removes heat energy from the air) and A/C performance suffers.
